Engaging in a home practice is a way of addressing the manner in which one personally organizes one’s self. The repetition of a refined home practice, over time, is what changes us. Pranayama allows us to enter the interior of our physical body by way of active and conscious participation with the lungs, the gateway to the interior. We place our mind within the body to navigate the interior, developing new pathways for consciousness to run through the bodily form, whilst developing a more facile imaginative experience. This process may be seen as akin to the chrysalis of a butterfly, as we wrap ourselves to emerge as something different, the product of our effort and insight. The integration of a home practice is a continuous self cultivation, a process that is never over. It is recreated and redirected with every experience one encounters through their life, making the Home Practice the ultimate refuge and space for insight.
Join us for a series of sessions where we will engage, through the trinity of the mind, body and the breath, the way inside ourselves and the riches we'll encounter as we enter.
YOUR PERSONAL SANCTUARY (Wednesday October 6th)
In this session we will explore: what is a home practice? One's home practice is the process of creating our "self" as our true private sanctuary. It is that most intimate and potent spiritual effort to develop an interior life. Our life inside holds insights to be accessed, feelings to be processed, tensions to be reconciled. It is through the experience of going and being inside, that we individuate; that we become ourselves.
EMBODYING THE BREATH (Wednesday October 13th)
In this session we will explore how to integrate pranayama into a home practice. The body is the form, the breath moves in and out of it; in time opening up spaces inside of it, so that eventually like the flow of water influencing the rock, the flow of ones breath changes the form (the container) itself; the body.....you.
ACHIEVING THE POSE (Wednesday October 20th)
In this session we will explore how to create the container to hold the elixir. Getting into the poses, that muscular effort to manipulate personal structure to embody each pose comes first. This happens by learning the language of the practice in order to find the fluency to fold and unfold, to fit oneself, to enter into the physical dialogue of form and flow. At first, flow is determined by form, but eventually flow deepens form.
BECOMING IMPLICIT (Wednesday October 27th)
In this session we will explore how the actual sequence of poses for a home practice is the body's language for accessing the implicit. Learning the language comes first. Then, the refinement of the practice over time, is the real portal to entry. While the effort to learn and manipulate ones body and refine a sequence of poses is personal, the theory and practice are formal. The same sequence of poses repeated as a daily practice creates a rhythm for not only entry into the interior but for inhabiting a life inside.
IN PERSON attendees are limited to 10 students and must be fully vaccinated in order to participate.
