Join us this fall to move through the foundations of the Katonah Yoga practice and theory in a series of workshops designed to equip you with the building blocks for a fulfilling practice. A sustainable and fruitful practice is one that is organized, functional, purposeful, alchemical and imaginative. Each workshop will be discussion and practice driven and focus on a specific aspect of the practice. This series is for students interested in building their own relationship with Katonah Yoga material and exploring its usefulness in their lives.
ORGANIZATION - Becoming an Architect (Saturday September 17th)
Like architects we can work with aspects of geometry to measure, fit and construct ourselves from the ground up. In this session we will discuss what it means to measure up and fit yourself and practice to find function, context and insight. Measuring up is not about measuring up to others ideas or expectations, it is about making your efforts efficacious. Through physically referencing geometry we find practical and tangible ways to organize ourselves in time and space so that we can more purposely navigate our lives.
FUNCTION - Becoming a Mechanic (Saturday October 15th)
The point of constructing anything is to use it. Setting up the structure of a posture leads us to the question… now what? In this session we will discuss how to move beyond static postures, exploring the benefits of poses and the ways in which we can use them. Through practice we will embody these techniques and experience concepts of stability, contact, mobility and repetition. We will also discuss our vital organs and their influence on our experience and use asana to support their functioning.
CHEMISTRY - Becoming a Baker (Saturday November 12th)
Why do we get a cake when we put together flour, sugar, butter and then bake it? Because if we follow a recipe the ingredients coalesce and the heat of an oven provides the proper chemistry for the cake to rise and become a delicious treat. Anytime we engage with our body we are affecting its chemistry because beyond organs, the body is composed of a nervous system. In this session we will explore Katonah practices with this in mind, play with our internal chemistry and tune our attentions to alchemical shifts.
IMAGINATION - Becoming an Artist (Saturday December 10th)
Imagination is the spark for the creative endeavor - the endeavor to make something a reality or to infuse our realities with new perspectives. Once we have the techniques or building blocks to navigate a practice, once we know how the pieces function and how to calibrate our systems, like artists, we can begin to play with possibility. Here we will examine the use of metaphor and narrative within the Katonah practice and consider playfulness as a creative tool.
