When it comes to creating a home practice the biggest hurdle is our capacity to stay with ourselves. Some are challenged by the poses themselves and are discouraged early in the effort. Some are challenged by setting aside the time or sticking with their determination. Still others are swayed by the myriad distractions available to us in everyday living. And most of us, over time, fall prey to procrastination, anxiety, frustration, losing our imaginative thread, missing the point, feeling stiff. While a workshop can introduce the theory and the practice itself, the real work of creating ourselves as our own sanctuary requires that we work together over time.
Join us as we collectively embark upon creating and maintaining a home practice over time. Working together we have a better chance of staying with it, enjoying the benefits of good physical and imaginative techniques that become refined by repetition, and that over time, change us.
SETTING THE CONDITIONS (Thursday July 6th)
Setting conditions is like following a recipe. This recipe, a sequence of asanas and breath techniques can be followed, repeated, manipulated, refined and redefined over time. We develop the capacity to create inner sanctity by setting up conditions of this very personal experience of self-care. In this session we will set up the framework for our time together, introducing the idea of a home practice… why to do it? when to do it? how to do it?
GROUNDING PRACTICE (Thursday July 13th)
A grounding practice establishes one’s bottom floor as the ground of one’s being. We ground ourselves in the service of descending roots for the depth work in order to rise, surge, ripen, boost and ascend to emotional, spiritual and intellectual heights of maturation. A grounding practice is like tilling our soil for the self to grow.
FLUENCY PRACTICE (Thursday July 20th)
A fluency practice will send a charge of energy flowing through our form, opening up potential, making us more yielding in the body and alert in the mind. Generating heat from rousing the body yields greater facility in all of its forms, as well as a way to access nimbleness in body, mind and imagination.
LONGEVITY PRACTICE (Thursday July 27th)
A longevity practice develops oneself as a snail in a shell for the development of our interior universe. We fold and unfold ourselves in the service of being reflective, imaginative and metaphorical, finding center and circumference by putting ourselves in the middle of our circumstances, in order to be radiant.
WORKING THROUGH THE POSES (Thursday August 3rd)
Many people find themselves struggling with the myriad poses that make up a home practice or question whether they are doing them right. In this session we will explore the poses that cause the most grievances, while offering an opportunity to workshop any poses that students may find challenging. Bring your questions and obstacles!
STAYING WITH YOURSELF (Thursday August 10th)
One of the most difficult conundrums of practicing with oneself is how to harness the mind. Like a goat on a tether, the mind needs that thread of connection preventing it from wandering so that we can get on with the business of being fully present, contained inside ourselves, just under the surface of daily life so that we can access more time and space within. Here we will discuss techniques for sticking with your practice and not deserting yourself on your mat.
INTEGRATING PRANAYAMA (Thursday August 17th)
Pranayama is a technique for rising above the physical body and into the esoteric realm. The power of breath work is to open up territory in our bodies for our spirit to move through it. Controlling the breath, channeling it to where we want it to go, in and around the body, allows us to channel consciousness, in and around our lives.
INTEGRATING THE WRAPS FOR RAPTURE (Thursday August 24th)
If the body is the vehicle, the mind the passenger and the breath the driver, then the wraps for rapture become the way to track and move through a route. In this session we will use our personal narrative thread to wrap ourselves into a string ball, employing the polarities of the wraps for rapture, to explore our personal sphere, putting ourselves in the middle of the polarity birthing the creation of trinity.
SUSTAINING THE PRACTICE (Thursday August 31st)
As our bodies shift over the weeks, months, years, and throughout the changing seasons, our home practices will too. Our bodies are not temples or sacred territory, they are where we live and spend all our time, where all experience happens. We can deploy a home practice to help guide and move through life, so that we won’t be thrown by or susceptible to circumstance, enabling us to become the nucleus of our own universe.
